Ice Cream Pinata October 19, 2012 Jessie Daye Eight days and an Ice Cream piñata later .... and so I begin my journey in becoming a Pinterest mother. To start you will need 12pt poster board. I made a pretty big piñata so my poster board was 32" wide. A smaller board would have been easier. Roll your board into a cone and tape it in place. You're going to cut the top point off so don't worry about it. Just like that. Now wrap your cone with wax paper. This is going to come out of the piñata when we are done. Now in a large mixing bowl (or paper bowl - even better) create your glue. This is Sheena. She works here. She's an excellent piñata glue maker : )Combine regular white flour with water until you have a semi-thick glue.Should be the consistency of thin yogurt. Now you have to cut your paper. Use a newspaper ... any newspaper. Cut a bunch of 2" strips. This is me. Apparently people think I don't actually do all these crafts featured on the blog. It's hard to take pictures of yourself. Thanks Sheena : ) Alright, now this is where the craft takes a turn for the worse. You need to glue all these strips on until everything is completely covered. Sounds easy, right? Wrong! This is only the first day my Lilyshop friends. Now you need to do this 2 more times with 24 hours of dry time in between each layer. Yes, that's right. You heard me. Three times total, letting each layer dry for 24 hours before you start the next. And to think we haven't even gotten to the ice cream part ..... Finally dry. And three layers thick. Now flip that puppy upside down and find a vase to stick it in. We're moving on to the balloon. Depending on what size cone you made you are going to need a 9" to 16" balloon (Mine is 16") - I used tape to hold my balloon in place. Whatever you do , don't remove the tape once you have started this process. It could rip the balloon. Make another batch of your glue mixture. This should be your fourth batch and your fourth day if you did three layers on your cone already. Lily is helping me paint the other side of the balloon. Good big sister. Same process as before. Soak all your strips and place them directly to the balloon then coat again with the glue mixture. You are going to do this three times. Just like you did with the cone. Each layer has to dry 24 hours before starting the next layer. And make sure you overlap your layers onto the cone itself. It should connect. Yup, this is a long process. I told you. Don't I look happy though? Yeah, well I'm not because this is actually my second balloon. Lily and I completely finished the first layer on our first balloon when I tried to peel off the tape and I accidentally popped the balloon .... bringing down a soaking pile of newspaper and a shriveled up balloon. I don't have a picture of this because it's very obvious what word I am screaming in the picture.Good thing Lily doesn't repeat bad words. And I completed it. Six days later my piñata is dry and ready to go! This is when you need to put your rope through the piñata. Cut two holes on the sides of your piñata and string a heavy rope right through it. Make sure your holes are far enough apart. I ended up putting so much candy in my piñata that it got too heavy and I had to take the rope out and tie it around the actual cone itself. When you cut your holes your balloon should pop and just fall to the bottom of your cone. Now you need to cut a flap in the top of the piñata so you can put the candy inside. Just cut along the bottom and gently lift it up to fit everything in. Don't fill the entire thing with candy. It's good to put some crepe paper inside to take up some of the space so it doesn't get too heavy. My masterpiece! I ended up using ivory napkins for the bottom half of the cone. And this worked great! I like the look of the two colors. As for the cone, those are just brown coffee filters. They are all folded in half and hot glued to the actual cone. And everyone loved beating it to shreds! (And I cried a little)
