Cake Slice Party Invitations

So I'm a little bit obsessed with fake food. Actually, I am totally obsessed with fake food. I am that woman in the antique store squeezing all the plastic grapes and playing with the fake ice cubes. I don't know what it is but I have always liked fake food. Since I was little actually. I was a waitress from the age of four on. I would take everyone's order while they sat on the couch. Well leave it to me to find these sponge cakes on Pinterest. Lots of people have done similar versions of this, but no one has used this amazing new product I haveeeeee. Cathie Filian from Plaid Crafts was generous to give me this brand spanking new collage clay that's due out in Michaels stores in May of 2014. It looks like frosting, but it's actually a Mod Podge that dries in 2 hours. I took car sponges and turned them into slices of cake then slapped a birthday invitation on the back. These would be amazing for a first birthday or a baby shower. I even turned one into a Valentine and gave it to my daughter's pre-school teacher. The possibilities are endless with this stuff!

I made this craft today on Home and Family on the Hallmark Channel (weekdays 10am/9c). What you need
Car Sponges
Serrated Knife (or electric Knife)
Scissors
Collage Clay
Hot glue
Mini 1/2" styrofoam balls
Red Paint
Green Paint
Mod Melts and mini glue gun

Take out your car sponge and lay it on a cutting board.

Using a serrated knife cut your sponge on a bias,length-wise like the picture above.

You should now have two cake slices.

Now cut off about an inch and half off the end so it looks more like a perfect slice. Toss the excess.

Now you want to make a groove in the center of each slice. Gently cut into the middle of the slice so you have two parallel lines.

Then, using scissors, cut out a small portion of the sponge. At this point if you want to make the sponge look like chocolate cake you can spray paint it with dark brown spray paint.

Now you can fill it with your collage clay. I used the pink collage clay for this one and fitted the bag with the star tip that comes with the collage clay. It works just like a piping bag does with real frosting. 

Using my finger I smoothed down the frosting just as it would look in a real slice of cake if you had just cut a slice.

Now stand the slice upright and start piping your frosting on the top and sides and leave standing until it's dry. It takes 2 hours to dry gently to the touch and 24 hours to completely dry.
